Dear eric,
Dr. Ricks and Marian

Happy Birthday! We love the Wednesday birthday celebrations at Siempre. This week it was for Pastor Israel and Vanessa's oldest daughter, Marian, who turned 7 and Dr. George Ricks, head of our medical clinic, who seems to get more fit with each birthday. That said, little Marian was brave enough to bite the cake and George... well he wasn't quite ready to risk a faceplant in the frosting. It was a fun beginning to a great afternoon together.

our group shot
25 children... the story of the family crammed in to two little shacks: 7 sisters with 25 kids among them captured all of our hearts. We headed out to visit the family with diapers and formula as soon as we pulled up last week. Pastor Israel knocked, he yelled and no one responded. Hard to imagine the little shack- made of recycled plywood, old doors and other garbage -was completely empty... but it was completely silent. On the humble gate built into the sunbaked dusty ground, hung a simple poster- in Spanish it said: "This is a Catholic house. Protestant propaganda is not welcome." Nicely printed, cool graphics, probably handed out at church- it contained a bunch of small print beneath the main text. Struggling to understand so strong a rebuff, I asked Pastor Israel what it meant, he said: "Brother, you're NOT welcome." Smiling, someone said, they never mind accepting the clothes and food Siempre gives them when they're hungry. Silently I thanked God for our simple mission- always for the children. We never ask about a child's religious background when they're brought to Siempre and when families come for help we sure don't require that they're part of "our" church... Siempre's an open door for everyone... anyone in need. It's why we built Samaritan House @ Siempre Para Los Ninos - brother, sister, you're welcome, you're invited, you're needed. Pray that the little signs that separate us can be taken down, especially when they put children at risk. Pray that there's always an open door at Siempre. Pray for the 25 kids crammed into a household that desperately needs someone to hear and respond to their cry for help in this time of need.
birthday cake together
Birthday dinners... they were one of the many ways our parents worked at building special times together. Most everyone remembers some form of family tradition surrounding birthdays. At Siempre the kids get to watch one of their peers blow out the candles and open a present... and then they all get to share the big birthday cake. Once all the children have cake, most of the workers share a piece together. Siempre's kids make the most of every afternoon celebration- taking a break from the routine - they have the opportunity to celebrate one more reason to enjoy growing up together. The children that came to us as infants have only known the celebrations- they don't remember being forgotten, neglected, abandoned. Our older kids remember well when a birthday came and went with little notice. Not because they were unloved but because dirt poverty eats away at the fabric that holds a family together. Children raised in bare subsistence level households discover that when tragedy strikes: job loss, death, addiction... a family that already was fighting for survival desperately needs anyone to come alongside them when parents are ready to abandon their children... birthday celebrations, family traditions, hope... abandoned long ago... Siempre doesn't step in- we do what we do -building family -keeping the doors open... and when heartbreak hits, we're ready with open arms. All those smiling faces, many of their mouths stuffed with cake, have found a place where they belong- where they're loved. All of it happens because of your continued loving support.
Arturo
I've been busy... no members of the senate or congress have called me for advice but many people across Southern California have wanted to talk- on the phone- in my office... all of them are looking for answers, reassurance, hope in the middle of this HUGE financial crisis. So many were hoping for an explanation, understanding of how this is all going to help- something that goes beyond the "talking heads" on TV and the politicians they feel abandoned them. I'm quick to confess that I don't have the answers to such a huge crisis in our economy. I've got my personal opinions... and I try my best to keep them to myself... because I'm certain, after listening, that people want to know what's really going to happen to a trillion dollars. Love this picture of Arturo... remember his first day at Siempre- four years ago next month -he couldn't walk, talk, not even a toddler yet- just a cute little kid. Today, because of your loving support for Siempre, Arturo is talking up a storm, runs like crazy, is well fed and well educated and is surrounded by leaders who love him. Give to Siempre and I can tell you exactly what's going to happen to your money- children like Arturo will be moved from hopelessness to home, from fear to family, from hunger to health, from being lost to new love. It doesn't cost a trillion, for a trillion we could care for every one of the 150 million children living on the streets of our world, for the last four years it's just required your loving support: financially, in prayer, working Memorial Day weekend, Wednesday afternoons- together, God's given us the opportunity to share Arturo's and all the children's growth. Don't know if we'll get a weekly update from our leaders in DC about who gets the trillion dollars- accompanied with heart touching photos... but I doubt it. I'm guessing we won't even get a thank you note. Without your loving support of Siempre I've got no clue where Arturo would be today... because of you, he's home at Siempre. Thanks so much. God is too good.

A picture of hope- Abbie and Vanessa, smiling, hugging, safe in the arms of Siempre. Each one dropped off at Siempre, alone... each one cried for nights... seeking comfort. Look at them now: happy, secure, in the open arms of love at Siempre. Send money... even in the middle of our nation's mess, you'll be blessed and it'll be a blessing. Pray for our workers and children- they need your loving support every day. Join us Memorial Day Weekend, schedule time at Samaritan House @ Siempre Para Los Ninos for your family, small group, church, service group, business- come make a difference, and remember, we're going this Wednesday afternoon, You're Invited! You're needed. Now, more than ever. Abbie and Vanessa are waiting to greet you.

siempre,
