Aida- ready for a great summer

Schools Out! Enirque, sticking his tongue out- along with Karla and Aida, have all wrapped up another school year and in a couple of days our younger kids celebrate their final day before summer and like kids everywhere, they're excited. No clue why they're sticking their tongues out at Cynthia... but hey, why not? It's the first day of summer, the weather's amazing at Siempre, the kids have a couple of weeks of camp to look forward to and plenty of vacation visitors and work camps stopping in... hopefully they're not already bored... keep our workers in your prayers!

Alejandro- Keeping an Eye on His Car
Keeping his eye on the car... Someone took it for a joy ride in the middle of the night and now Alejandro's not letting it out of his sight. They found it not far away- all their personal items gone -but happy to have it back. Tom Buckingham was with us yesterday and said he has an extra "club," one of those gadgets that hooks over the steering wheel, keeping crooks away and I'm sure Alejandro's already learned the same lesson most of us have also learned the hard way at least once about leaving too much good stuff in the car overnight. I'm sure he's counting the days until vacation.

Summer in a beach community, if you've lived in one, you know it's not usually the time of year residents look forward too. And even though Siempre's a mile or two off the water, and it's not exactly a beach resort... everyone's got family... and when it's over 110 inland, the folks in our neighborhood get visitors. Add to that the increased property values and investor's from across the border coming down and you've got a recipe for both the bonuses and challenges of any beach community. New signs are up for lots being built on less then a mile from Siempre- home prices start at $350,000- impossible for anyone in our little community... but a deal if you consider prices ten miles north across the border. Hopefully all the new development will only improve opportunity for siempre's kids. It's a great time to visit, enjoy summer, a cooler climate and help give the kids something to do and give our workers a break!
Daniella - glad to be out
Chicken Pox may be a thing of the past in the US but it's active and still hitting kids in the developing world and for two weeks it's been wreaking havoc at Siempre. Daniella may be up and around- with just a few scars and bad memories -but 3 other kids are covered with the stuff... poor little Ricardo's got it from head to toe... and needless to say, everyone in the household's been exposed. Before we got out of the car Wednesday, we went over whether or not we'd had it - we all had - and whether we were ok to step into the middle of it all. I actually think I've had them twice... and as each pox covered kid wanted to give me a hug, I couldn't help but consider spending the next week or two with red blisters breaking out all over!

Family dynamics change when kid's get sick. When over 25 kids are at risk, along with their care givers, it's a whole new ball game. Pray that our workers stay healthy, that the chicken pox quickly goes and that everyone is ready to enjoy a great camp. Pray also for the children and adults of the surrounding community. Siempre offers all the comforts most of us experienced when we battled chicken pox and other child hood diseases- outside of siempre... for people living in extreme poverty or just getting by, these can be times that threaten lives and eat away at what little income they have as they do their best to provide comfort and restore health. Hopefully, our medical clinic will be able to offer vaccinations and medication on a community wide scale for years to come. The chicken pox kind of snuck up on everyone.
a beautiful day
Beautiful Summer Days, highlight the limited number of safe areas for our children to play. There's no community park. Open fields and canyons have rattle snakes and scorpions and there's only so much the kids can do on the little dirt road out front. There's plenty of indoor room and with the dining hall almost complete, more on the way. But all the kids miss our basket ball court. We're saving money to move the much loved swing set a little closer to Siempre which will give us exactly the same amount of area for a new BB court up front. We're also planning a new fence around the entire property... there have been a few problems with people "approaching" the kids. We're hoping for something strong and decorative around the front and good solid chain link around the back. Then comes the sod, landscaping and drainage that will keep us from flooding the church and making our last play areas mud pits when winter rains come. All that and we don't even have Israel and his family into their home yet, tables and chairs for the dining hall, kitchen ware or the dental clinic set. It may be beautiful and sunny today but the only way we'll give the kids and community the care and support they need is by staying one step ahead of the game.

Our Greatest Need is still your regular financial support. As a pastor, I remind people often that with their tithes, great ministries on skid row, in Kenya or at Siempre wouldn't exist and in the same way, at Siempre, without those who give weekly and monthly to meet our budget, we'd never have the opportunity to grow or even shelter the kids we have, our doors would close. That can't happen. Thanks so much to each of you that have written the kids of Siempre into your budget. If it's $10- a month, $1- a day or $100- a month... it keeps the kids safe and warm when so many others are still fighting for survival so far from the promise of Siempre. We remain their hope... because of you. If you'd like to begin to support Siempre, check out our web site at www.siemprekids. org, or never hesitate to call me directly with questions.

Ken's still working non-stop, coming alongside Pastor Israel and Alejandro in hopes of getting the Memorial Day Weekend job done as soon as possible. It's looking more incredible with each visit. If you'd ever like to go down, Ken's spending most every Wednesday and many Saturdays there until the jobs done. I did another walk through with the little camera on video this week. You can enjoy it at: This Weeks Movie. Follow the link or just double click on the video box from the web site. (Yahoo still hadn't posted it at the time this email went out- it should be the newest video, "Our New Building... Walk Through #4, dated June 20). Hope you're enjoying your part in Siempre. Yesterday Tom and I had a long talk on the way home- one of the side benefits of driving down each week -and realized we were having the time of our lives. I pray that you realize His blessings wonderfully as well in all you do.

PS

No Siempre Updates for the next 2 weeks. Next update following our medical clinic on July 11.
