Dr. Ricks visits the first Wednesday of each month and it's becoming a popular day at Siempre. The first few clinics seemed to focus primarily on getting Siempre's kids through winter colds, flu and the other normal health issues of a family. In fact, every time little Christina sees Dr. Ricks she fakes a cough in hopes of being seen. This Wednesday may have marked a turning point as each of the patients were community members with medical issues beyond the routine seasonal battles. Both young and old alike waited with high hopes of healing, knowing that the doctor was in. It was just the beginning of a day of many blessings at Siempre.

Naphtali on the drums
That's Naphtali on the drums. He's not just one of Siempre's kids, he also plays in the churches praise team, while Pastor Israel plays the guitar. Siempre's not only given him a home, but it's given him a church home and the opportunity to learn how to discover and develop his musical talent and put it to work on a regular basis. He's a great kid and enjoyed playing for everyone in the church while they waited to see the doctor.

Too often people see the church as a place to go for worship on Sunday mornings. At Siempre, the little church we built is being used seven days a week for everything from our monthly medical clinic to Pastor Israel's new community breakfast program with numerous other practical applications in between. Wednesday, Israel was saying that the school kids of the community will soon be outnumbered by the senior citizens coming for breakfast and assistance each morning. Great things are happening on our campus that our impacting the entire community and each of the kids living at Siempre not only have the opportunity to participate in them but they also have discovered new hope and pride in sharing in something greater than they ever imagined. God is great and He's using His church to reach people in amazing ways for healing and to restore new hope.
Living Reminders
Antonio - just enjoying the day
Two of our kids had to be placed in protective custody this week. Not Antonio, he was hanging out and having a great time, like always. He's such a fantastic kid. But, two kids, who were placed with us by their remaining extended family after some pretty horrible things happened to them. Our leaders needed to seek out the assistance of DIF, Mexico's version of Child Protective Services to make sure that the kids were kept sheltered and away from any harm. It was a tough decision for them to make and they only did it when they realized it was in the best interest of our kids. DIF has promised to do all they can to protect them both and hopefully to place them back in Siempre when the situation is resolved. Keep our leaders and more importantly, these children, in your prayers.

Everyone doesn't need to know which children they are. I fully appreciate how much some of you have grown to love each of the kids, but also realize that they deserve their privacy when it comes to the heart breaking reasons they live at Siempre. It's important to look at each child and remember that they wouldn't be with us it they didn't carry their own story that probably keeps them up nights when other children are sleeping peacefully. Every child at Siempre is a living reminder of the hundreds of millions of children around the world that go without, are abandoned, hungry, hurting and need the love and hope that Siempre Para Los Ninos provides so wonderfully. Each of our kids are concerned and missing their friends that had to leave this week. I'm certain that they each live with a fear that someday the same thing could happen to them and they could just as quickly lose the security and hope they've discovered at Siempre. Please keep them in your prayers.
Imperfect Work
The Cross at Siempre
The Cross at Siempre was built by my brother-in-law, Dan Hamer, and the kids of Siempre. Pastor Ken, who oversees all our building projects, had wisely assigned this important task to Dan last Memorial Day Weekend, and I blew my top! Dan's one of my best friends and I definitely could have never asked for a better brother-in-law. Dan's not a finish carpenter. Worse yet, Dan, along with his sons Pat, Derek and Reggie, rounded up all the kids of Siempre and had them help build the cross: each of the nailing the beams together. All I could think of was: all this effort, all this money spent and the cross that's going to hang over it all is being built by children- needless to say, I'd taken my eyes off the prize.

They built a beautiful cross. Each time I look at it I remember my sister lecturing me on the importance of every child playing a part. I think of the imperfect work of the church in the service of our Perfect Savior. At Siempre, they're planning for Easter. They're all excited. Each week we visit I'm amazed at how much has been accomplished and overwhelmed at how much there still is to do. This week, tired from traveling, barely adjusted to our time zone, I looked at the cross in Siempre, reflected back on how I thought it would come out when Dan first picked up a hammer, then looked at what a beautiful reminder of sacrifice it is today as we enter the Easter season. Our work at Siempre may be an imperfect start and many of us may not feel qualified for the task at hand. But this is the work God's given us. These are the children He's entrusted to our care- and they're only a beginning- so many more await the promise and shelter of siempre- we've been given a great work to do. Together, we can.

You Can Help! We need you to give to our upcoming rummage sale- Saturday, March 17th. Your cool stuff not being used, that car sitting in the garage, the boat you're too busy to get to, that storage unit that's not been opened in months: donate it all- we'll sell it! We need you to golf in our upcoming golf tournament, Saturday, April 28th. We need you to take a day off with friends and golf, to sign up to sponsor a tee or a green, to donate towards the auction- some VERY cool gifts have already been made- to attend the post golf tourney dinner and auction and spend generously! This is how we're paying for our building- our biggest building yet- Memorial Day Weekend, you can be part of the imperfect plan to accomplish God's perfect work- loving His kids and giving them safe shelter at Siempre. Don't miss the moment!

Kenya was incredible! We shared The Jesus Film from the deserts of W. Pokot at 105 degrees to interior Maasai villages in the cold, under heavy African rain, from school rooms in small towns to dark parking lots at night in urban Nairobi- it was an amazing time and we could have never done it without your prayers, love, financial support and encouragement. God used us in wonderful ways and we've been extended more invitations to continue to work in Kenya and central Africa then we know how to accept. God is great and He's doing great things with some pretty amazing people around the world. I feel so fortunate to share in His great adventure. You can catch up on what went on in Kenya at my blogs listed above. Thanks again for your part in all we do.

siempre,

making friends in Kenya
