Dear john,
Vanessa- Enjoying a Great Day for Sweatshirts

I forgot to bring my jacket! Within minutes of getting out of the truck at Siempre, I was regretting it. What a cold day! Praise God for all the sweatshirts and clothes the kids got for Christmas. Everyone is given a break from homework when we arrive on Wednesdays and within minutes the yard was filled with children playing, riding bikes and looking for attention. It didn't matter that gray clouds covered the sun or that the wind cut like a knife making goose bumps jump. It was time to play and everyone needed a break. Celebration always seems just on the edge of breaking forth on Wednesday afternoons at Siempre Para Los Ninos - even when it's cold.

Our New Building Pad
Our New Building! Memorial Day Weekend's building trip gets here faster than each year. Looking for any excuse to step out of the cold, Pastor Israel and I stepped into the church to go over some of our plans for this year. It's a big step for our little campus- and for Pastor Israel and his family, we're going to tear down his house. Building it wasn't easy. They've learned to love the place. But it's the perfect spot to connect our two buildings, the church and Siempre, with a multi- purpose building, a new kitchen, room enough for everyone to sit and eat together at meals, secure storage for our medical clinics and a new home for Israel and his family on the second floor. A HUGE task for one weekend with lot's of planning and preparation work in the months leading up to the build. We have a fundraising team working on our first ever golf tounement this April. You don't have to wait until April to register to golf, to build Memorial Day Weekend, or to donate some incredible gift for the auction following the tourney. It's going to be an expensive building and half of the proceeds from the tournement will go towards it- the other half towards meeting our annual budget. Let me know how you'd like to be involeved. Raising children, in our families or at Siempre, is about acting today to insure that we can keep our promises tomorrow. Every step we take in the development of our campus brings us one step closer to not only keeping our promises to kids at Siempre but also of having the opportunity to continue to welcome children who need to be rescued in time of crisis.
Moises - Doing his homework
Moises was raised in a very rough neighborhood. When one of his brothers was facing a crisis I drove over and met his remaining family members. The community is on a little hill outside of TJ and the "home" he grew up in faces the only paved road. The walls had been constructed of junk and there was no front door. Little wonder that when Moises first came to Siempre he lived like someone had dropped him into Disneyland. He's a natural athlete and a huge risk taker. Given time on anything from a bike to the swingset, he not only mastered it but was soon better than all the other kids at whatever came along. But he struggled with school and the disciplines of going each day and working at his classes. A great kid suddenly free to have a good time in what had been a short, hard life. Who could blame him for shining on school? It wasn't like he had a family history to lean back on or some grand vision of a future filled with prosperity and hope. Why bother with more than enjoying today?

Then it happened. Sometime in the last two years Moises found a hope worth working towards. He was always a good kid, but now he was willing to help out with all of the children. Always a bright young man, but now he began to apply himself at school and to faithfully work on his homework. It's like that with most of the kids. They come to us and wonder how long this good thing could last. Then, through the love of our fantastic workers and the routine of waking up to find a meal each day and the basics of life met. They begin to believe that life might hold something greater for them then they'd ever imagined. It's happened with Moises. He still likes to play hard and it would be great if we could get him into little league, a soccer camp or on a surfboard. The kid's going to shine. But he's also discovered that life holds promises that he's just beginning to discover and now he's working towards them as well. Pray for Moises and all the kids. Pray for our workers who frame their days around the kids needs. Pray that God would open horizons greater than they ever imagined and they would believe that all things are possible. Siempre's kids are going to be part of the solution to the problems that we face as a society today. Each one carries a promise of hope and deliverance from The Father. He's trusting us to protect them and help them find their way.
100,000 Miles
I bought my Toyota Sequoia new 3 years ago with Siempre in mind. I knew it could handle the roads, the miles and carry the passengers and cargo there and back again each week without fail. It hasn't let me down. This week when it rolled over the 100k mark I quietly thanked God for so many safe journeys with so many wonderful people. It's fun to see what we carry down one Wednesday to the next. Even more fun to watch the kids in excitement help us unload. (This week we took several hundred tortilla's donated by a grocer who'd like to become a regular food resource for Siempre) But our best times are the hours driving home. People often ask how I have patience to sit in line at the border week in and week out - I don't. But I don't need it. The hours coming home are always filled with wonderful stories of the kids, our visitors experiences with them, and the excitement of watching someone new catch the vision of Siempre Para Los Ninos and all she represents. Thanks so much to each of you that have made every mile meaningful in more ways than I could ever recall.

Thank you. December was our best month ever for giving through Siempre's web site. More people are discovering the joy of sharing in Siempre and are taking advantage of the opportunity to help rescue children in need and extend the promise of Siempre. Children who have known the fear, hunger, pain and estrangement of poverty are discovering the promise of always - always fed, always loved, always home. Without your support our doors would close. We can never let that happen to Moises, just as he begins to believe in a future and a hope, or to any of our kids. Together, we can do more than we ever thought possible.

Keep Siempre Para Los Ninos - her children and her leaders - in your prayers. There's so much to do. Pray for me. Know that you are continually in my thoughts and prayers. Thanks so much for all you do.

siempre,
